Profoundly deaf since the age of 12, Evelyn Glennie refused to accept rejection of her desire to become a solo percussionist. She continued to follow her dream; and today she is recognised as the first classically trained solo percussionist, one of the finest in the world. She regularly plays barefoot during both live performances and studio recordings in order to better "feel" the music. Evelyn contends that deafness is largely misunderstood by the public. She claims to have taught herself to hear with parts of her body other than her ears. In response to criticism from the media, Glennie published the following Hearing Essay in which she personally discusses her condition. // more
